Therapeutic embolization of systemic arterial supply to normal basal segments of the left lower lobe of the lung

Abstract: Systemic arterialization of normal lung without sequestration is a rare congenital abnormality. The basal segments of the left lower lobe are most frequently involved. The involved lung has no structural abnormalities of the tracheobronchial tree that distinguish this abnormality from bronchopulmonary sequestration. Haemoptysis and exertional dyspnoea are common presenting symptoms. We report the case of a 26-year-old man who presented with recurrent haemoptysis due to systemic arterialization of basal segment… Show more

“…In recent years, because of high surgery related morbidity and mortality, (vascular plug 8-AV malformation) the endovascular embolization technique has been increasingly used for the treatment of this disease. Mainly, the endovascular materials used coils5,9,10,11. However, in this case, the diameter of the feeding artery was about 10 mm which could be associated with high risks of incomplete occlusion, recanalization and embolization of the coil12.…”

“…[ 5 ] Metallic coils were the preferred embolic materials in the previously reported cases. [ 6 7 8 9 10 ] Most of the times, multiple coils were required. Using NBCA glue along with multiple coils to form a compact mass of coils has also been reported.…”

“…None of the previously reported 11 cases of endovascular treatment developed any major complications and none of them required surgery. [ 6 8 9 10 12 ] Mild chest pain after the procedure has been reported frequently.…”

“…Hemoptysis is the most common manifestation, while some patients may exhibit no symptoms; in rare cases, patients may develop fever and cough with or without expectoration[ 2 - 4 ]. Surgical resection or therapeutic embolization are the main treatment modalities, while some cases may require vascular reconstruction[ 2 , 5 , 6 ]. We report a senile patient with ASALLL who was successfully treated by surgical resection.…”
