Therapeutic Effects of Epidermal Growth Factor on Benzalkonium Chloride–Induced Dry Eye in a Mouse Model

Abstract: Topical application of EGF presented clinical improvements on dry eye by stabilizing the tear film and maintaining the integrity of epithelium. The results indicate that EGF has potential as a therapeutic agent in clinical treatment of dry eye.

“…Benzalkonium chloride (BAC) has been used to cause corneal surface damage to model dry eye disease in mice (Lin et al, 2011;He et al, 2012;Sarkar et al, 2012;Xiao et al, 2012Xiao et al, , 2013Lin et al, 2013;Zhang et al, 2014). The degree of corneal surface damage is proportional to the concentration and duration of BAC.…”

“…Of these dry eye models, two strains of mice, BALB/c and C57BL/6, have been frequently used in studies from different groups in which the BAC eye drops were topically applied in a similar manner. For example, Liu and colleagues in Xiamen, China and Yang and coworkers in Gangneung, Korea developed a dry eye model using BALB/c mice [10,22,23,24]. Barabino and colleagues in Genoa, Italy and Park and coworkers in Daegu, Korea used C57BL/6 mice [3,25].…”

“…Specifically, no study was reported on the specific effects of SERPINA3K on dry eye and ocular surface squamous metaplasia, which are the most common ocular surface diseases in the Copyright 2014 The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Inc. www.iovs.org j ISSN: 1552-5783 clinic setting. In the present study, we used a mouse dry eye model induced by benzalkonium chloride 21,22 (BAC) to investigate and focus on the specific effects of SERPINA3K on the formation of squamous metaplasia and explore its possible underlying mechanism.…”
