“…We have, since this time, recognized in-depth insights that participants shared regarding the salience and meaning of their gay identities, particularly in the context of their healthcare experiences, and have engaged in a secondary analysis of these primary data using a constructivist approach ( Charmaz, 2006 ; Clarke & Charmaz, 2014 ). Secondary qualitative data analysis is considered appropriate when a dataset promises to address theoretical and substantive gaps in a body of literature that a researcher identifies during post hoc readings of the data ( Dufour et al, 2019 ; Hinds et al, 1997 ; Whiteside et al, 2012 ).…”

“…We primarily focused our secondary data analysis on the responses that participants gave to the interview protocol items outlined in Supplementary Table 2 , though we did analyze full transcripts as well in order to capture any relevant data appearing beyond responses to these questions. Following the tenets of constructivist grounded theory methods for secondary data analysis ( Dufour et al, 2019 ; Whiteside et al, 2012 ), we led an inductive and iterative secondary analytical process to arrive at the article’s final insights. We began this process by first developing preliminary, descriptive open codes across participants’ responses to the interview questions under analysis, as well as any relevant text appearing elsewhere in interview transcripts.…”

“…We also used secondary quantitative data collected by Himiyama (2010) as part of a study on the Asahikawa Environmental Map Contest. The secondary data analysis offers many advantages (Dufour & Richard, 2019). It also makes it possible to determine the validity or credibility of previous studies and to access rich descriptive data on another historical era or on the context in which the primary data were collected (Corti, 2007).…”

“…"Anyone" includes the creator(s) of the data, other members of the creating research group, and any other researcher. Use cases include using data from previous experiments to plan new ones, reanalyzing data using different or new preprocessing or analytical approaches to either compare different methodologies (Dufour & Richard, 2019) or to address new scientific aspects (e.g., the use of trait databases Schneider et al (2019)), metaanalyses (e.g., Culina et al, 2018;Zimmerman, 2008), reproduction of the studies, and use of data for teaching and training (e.g., Atenas and Havemann (2015); or Henty (2015)).…”
