Angela Merkel has stood out as a global leader during her 16-years tenure as Chancellor of Germany. Her chancellorship included navigating dynamics of human rights issues (support for migrants - particularly Syrian refugees), environmental protections, citizens’ wellbeing, and economic development. This paper examines the nature of her complex leadership journey, successes, and challenges through the lens of responsible leadership theory and serves three purposes. Firstly, it is an effort to provide a window into Merkel’s leadership and the lessons it offers for leading in a world amidst crises, polarization, and complexity. Major insights in this regard include acting with courage, navigating crises with persistence, pursing multilateral collaborations, and building a nonconforming leadership profile. Secondly, it critically examines the relevance of responsible leadership theory as a framework for globally responsible leadership, especially outside the realm of business organizations. In doing so, the paper particularly explores the role of ethical grounding, relational competence, and adaptive and systems capability as key dimensions of responsible leadership. Finally, it identifies some gaps in and blind spots of responsible leadership conceptualizations and offers considerations to expand the field.

Women’s underrepresentation in political leadership has been a constant global challenge during recent decades. Although women’s leadership and its impact on organizational and country performance have been systematically explored, new research avenues are opened through the emergence of various crises. Crises constitute instances in which the intersection of leadership and communication is shaped and enforced, and how female leaders tackled and managed crises has been found to be different from that of their male counterparts in various instances. This study aims to examine the crisis communication approach taken by Jacinda Ardern during the 2020 global public health crisis generated by the Covid-19 pandemic. Female leaders were found to enforce a more effective and persuasive communication approach during the crisis, but Jacinda Ardern’s crisis management approach has been grounded in a feminist ethics of care since her response to the Christchurch mosque shootings in 2019. This article aims to emphasize the importance of communication in reframing leadership, by analyzing Jacinda Ardern’s Facebook communication from the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis. By examining how her messaging is embedded in values and attitudes specific to the ethics of care, we contribute to theorizing ways in which crisis communication is grounded in feminist ethics.

This study aims to explore the leadership of Indah Putri Indriani as a regent within the North Luwu Regency Government in the process of compassionate leadership in facing the challenges of the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in North Luwu Regency. This research method is exploratory-qualitative with a phenomenological approach in exploring the process of compassionate leadership in facing the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic in North Luwu Regency. The results of this study indicate that the COVID-19 pandemic in the North Luwu Regency highlights the need for leaders to apply the principle of compassion in order to be able to make decisions and programmes that encourage integrated and appropriate cross-sectoral responses, taking into account contextual factors in their implementation. In handling the Corona Virus Disease 2019, the government of North Luwu Regency created a cooperation programme with UNICEF Indonesia and Geneva Madani in North Luwu Regency. Then, from these two programs, create a home medicine budget allocation programme for people affected by the Corona Virus Disease 2019 in North Luwu Regency, highlighting the reduction of suffering and difficulties for local people in North Luwu Regency. This research contributes to providing knowledge about lessons learned from local governments dealing with difficult situations such as the Corona Virus Disease of 2019 by prioritising the mindset and attitude of compassionate leadership. This approach emphasises a better understanding of the real needs and difficulties faced by the community.
