Theoretical potential of agrovoltaic systems in Europe: a preliminary study with winter wheat

Abstract: This study presents an evaluation of the potential of agrovoltaic (combined use of photovoltaic systems and crop production) systems in Europe, using a python-based agrovoltaic simulation tool. The evaluation is based on three criteria: the PV energy yield, potential crop yield, and the agronomic impact of the agrovoltaic system on the biomass yield. Results confirm that the potential of PV energy increases with decreasing latitude, i.e. higher solar insolation levels. In contrast, the potential agricultural y… Show more

“…According to the authors, the lack of profitability in some combinations of the examples analyzed here does not detract from the potential profitability of APV systems. The fruit orchard is protected from hail and sunburn damage [71] allowed by APV shading and, most importantly, this increases the diversity of farmers.…”

“…For a successful planning of an AV system, a 3D modeling tool was developed that simulates site-specific possible shading and calculates the economic efficiency of the system [160]. The tool was developed specifically for fruit crops that have a specific flowering time, where the shading time is crucial.…”

“…The tool was developed specifically for fruit crops that have a specific flowering time, where the shading time is crucial. Based on the modeling, a prototype agrovoltaic system with pear trees and semi-transparent modules was built in Bierbeek, Belgium [160]. The hail net protection system was replaced by semi-transparent PV modules placed in a dome arrangement above the pear orchard [161].…”

“…The co-location of commercially available solar panels with the agricultural is commonly called Agrivoltaics or Agrovoltaics [57][58][59][60]. Agrivoltaics are different compared to typical solar farms since the latter are mainly installed for generating electricity.…”
