Theoretical model of the modulation transfer function for fiber optic taper

Abstract: Fiber optic taper has been used more and more widely as a relay optical component in the integrated taper assembly image intensified sensors for military and medical imaging application. In this paper, the transmission characteristic of energy in the taper is analyzed, and following the generalized definition of the modulation transfer function for sampled imaging system, a spatial averaged impulse response and a corresponding MTF component that are inherent in the sampling process of taper are deduced, and th… Show more

“…The image displayed on the LCD image plane (pixel size = 35 μm) of the resin printer is sampled The modulation transfer function (MTF) for the fiber-optic taper was calculated and measured to determine the effect of the FOT in transferring images from its base to the top facet. The point image analysis method was used to estimate the theoretical 26 and measured 27 MTF of the FOT used. MTF is the measure of the image contrast to determine the resolution limit on the smaller facet, i.e., with the FOT working as an image demagnifier.…”

“…The authors [25] have shown that in the case of a Lambertian light source the coupling efficiency of light into optical fiber depends on the NA of an optical fiber. PCS fiber (n core = 1.457 and n clad = 1.41) has NA = 0.3671 and Θ m = 21.5°.…”

“…This paper mainly analyzes the imaging characteristics of the FODTE utilizing the Fourier analysis method. The input (output) plane of the FODTE [8][9][10] can be regarded as the image dissector which is composed of the optical fibers (pixels) arranged according to specific rules. The input plane of the pixel sampling window is shown in figure 3 (left).…”
