Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are one of the most important materials in gas turbine to protect the high temperature components. RETa3O9 compounds have a defect‐perovskite structure, indicating that they have low thermal conductivity, which is the critical property of TBCs. Herein, dense RETa3O9 bulk ceramics were fabricated via solid‐state reaction. The crystal structure was characterized by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman Spectroscope. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to observe the microstructure. The thermophysical properties of RETa3O9 were studied systematically, including specific heat, thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity, thermal expansion coefficients, and high‐temperature phase stability. The thermal conductivities of RETa3O9 are very low (1.33‐2.37 W/m·K, 373‐1073 K), which are much lower than YSZ and La2Zr2O7; and the thermal expansion coefficients range from 4.0 × 10−6 K−1 to 10.2×10−6 K−1 (1273 K), which is close to La2Zr2O7 and YSZ. According to the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) curve there is not phase transition at the test temperature. Due to the high melting point and excellent high‐temperature phase stability with these oxides, RETa3O9 ceramics were promising candidate materials for TBCs.

Rare‐earth oxides are intrinsically hydrophobic, and this characteristic opens new horizons for their design and diverse applications as robust hydrophobic surfaces. Here, we discover some rare‐earth (RE) monosilicates (RE2SiO5) that are hydrophobic under ambient conditions. Their hydrophobicity is positively correlated with their hot‐steam corrosion at 1400°C. RE3+ in RE2SiO5 is further found to be a hydration prohibitor, and its species can regulate hydration and volatilization at very high temperatures. These results may provide basis for innovative designs of RE silicates in harsh hot‐steam environments for robust environmental barrier coatings (EBC) or as ceramic components.

SmTaO 4 , Sm 3 TaO 7 and SmTa 3 O 9 ceramics were prepared via a high temperature solid-state reaction. The results show that the phase structures of the SmTaO 4 ceramics are a monoclinic phase (space group: I2 (5)), the Sm 3 TaO 7 ceramics are an ordered orthorhombic phase (space group: Ccmm), and the SmTa 3 O 9 ceramics are an orthorhombic phase (space group: Cmmm). Macromolecular and crystal structures of Sm 3 TaO 7 and SmTa 3 O 9 are more complex than those of SmTaO 4 , which can enhance phonon scattering and reduce thermal conductivity. Compared with those of SmTaO 4 and SmTa 3 O 9 , Sm 3 TaO 7 has the smallest grain size, indicating that a small grain size has an effect on strength and ensures material stability. Because of a distorted TaO 6 octahedron and a high concentration of cation vacancy in the lattice of SmTa 3 O 9 , its thermal conductivity increases with increasing temperature. Compared with that of 7-8 YSZ, Sm 3 TaO 7 has a low thermal conductivity (1.3-1.7 W·m −1 ·K −1 at 100°C-900°C), and its minimum thermal conductivity is nearly 30% lower than that of YSZ. The Sm 3 TaO 7 ceramics have the highest TECs at approximately 9.82×10 −6 K −1 at 1200°C, which is close to that of 7-8 YSZ (approximately 10×10 −6 ). This indicates that Sm 3 TaO 7 has the potential to be employed as a thermal barrier coating.
