The Yokohama system for reporting directly sampled endometrial cytology: The quest to develop a standardized terminology

Abstract: The success of TYS will depend on the acceptance of TYS by all the relevant pathology and gynecologic oncology communities who, by their joint efforts, will adopt, critically evaluate, and optimize this method with the only aim of further improving the impact of endometrial cytology on patients' care.

“…Although endometrial hysteroscopy and/or curettage may be used for the diagnosis, this intervention is difficult to apply for screening because it is invasive, time‐consuming, and expensive. Endometrial cytology by brush sampling has been widely applied for the screening of endometrial neoplasms . This method is a simple, painless, inexpensive and relatively accurate strategy to obtain materials for cancer detection, showing a sensitivity of 79% and a specificity of 99% .…”

“…Endometrial cytology by brush sampling has been widely applied for the screening of endometrial neoplasms. 3 This method is a simple, painless, inexpensive and relatively accurate strategy to obtain materials for cancer detection, showing a sensitivity of 79% and a specificity of 99%. 4 However, there are some factors that interfere with conventional smear quality, and the presence of excess blood is one of the main factors.…”

“…This target was reached through the serious and fruitful discussion in the symposium in the ICC2016 at Yokohama, Japan, when internationally gathered experts on endometrial cytology developed a globally acceptable descriptive reporting system for endometrial cytology; named "The Yokohama system (TYS) for Reporting Endometrial Cytology (TYS reporting format)" [76]. The diagnostic categories of "TYS reporting format" and the "Algorithmic Interpretational Approach for TYS" are shown in Table 1 and Figure 5, respectively.…”
