“…Heretofore, community risk has been assessed using many different proxies, including structure and population density maps coupled with a hazard proxy in surrounding lands [23,24,[82][83][84][85]. Nonetheless, we proved that structure density plus a hazard does not necessarily correlate with the number of exposed structures per year.…”

“…In wildland-urban interface (WUI) areas, our exposure results offer a valuable resource for providing a spatially explicit and quantitative measure of buildings threatened by wildfires and for enhancing existing WUI maps (Del Giudice et al, 2021;Bar-Massada et al, 2023), which aid in identifying areas where structures intermingle with hazardous fuels. However, previous studies have shown that high building density does not necessarily correlate with high wildfire exposure or losses (Alcasena et al, 2021(Alcasena et al, , 2022, thus emphasizing the need of estimating the actual number of structures threatened by wildfires and provide policymakers with rough estimates of potential impacts during wildfires.…”

“…In general, a WUI is the contact area of urban land use and fire-prone wildland vegetation [66][67][68][69]. Although there have been a number of WUI mapping methodologies proposed and tested (e.g., [70][71][72]), a univocal definition of a WUI is not yet available for the Mediterranean region [73]. The WUI mapping procedure distinguishes two major classes, depending on the relationship between the built-up surfaces and the wildland vegetation: the (i) interface (where built-up areas meet wildland vegetation) and (ii) intermix (where built-up areas intermingle with wildland vegetation) [74].…”
