The Wikipedia Image Retrieval Task

Abstract: The Wikipedia image retrieval task at ImageCLEF provides a test-bed for the system-oriented evaluation of visual information retrieval from a collection of Wikipedia images. The aim is to investigate the effectiveness of retrieval approaches that exploit textual and visual evidence in the context of a large and heterogeneous collection of images that are searched for by users with diverse information needs. This chapter presents an overview of the available test collections, summarises the retrieval approaches… Show more

“…Related research on the ImageCLEF 2011 Wikipedia collection is generally based on a combination of text and image retrieval [47]. To our best knowledge, there is no approach that has modelled the collection as a graph structure and no approach has therefore leveraged the explicit links between information objects and between information objects and their features.…”

“…The proposed multimedia retrieval framework is evaluated in three datasets, namely the the WIKI11 [26], the IAPR-TC12 [10] and the MediaEval dataset from the diversity task of 2015 [13]. The WIKI11 dataset has 237,434 images with descriptions in one to three languages and 50 topics with one to five query images with caption.…”

“…The WIKI11 and IAPR-TC12 datasets have been annotated by means of the ImageCLEF campaign [10,26]. A title and a short description correspond to each image of both datasets, thus formulating the textual modality.…”
