Efecto del ccomportamiento de amamantamiento, sexo del becerro y orden del parto sobre la producción de leche en búfalos Efeito do comportamento de amamentação, sexo do bezerro e ordem de parto sobre a produção de leite em bubalinos AbstractBackground: the allonursing effect on daily milk production (DMP) and total milk production (TMP) has been little explored. Objective: to evaluate the effect of nursing behaviour, sex of the calf and parity order (PO) on DMP and TMP of buffalo cows. Methods: thirty-five buffalo cows and their calves were evaluated. Observations were performed monthly (three consecutive days) from May to November. The nursing behavior was characterized as: 1) isolated filial nursing (IFN); 2) collective filial nursing (CFN), and 3) non-filial nursing (NFN). Cows were grouped into four categories to study the effects of nursing behavior on DMP and TMP: 1) non-permissive (NP); 2) filial permissive (FP); 3) filial and collective filial permissive (FCFP); and 4) filial, collective filial and non-filial permissive (FCFNFP). DMP was recorded three days per month and TMP was calculated as DMP*270 days of lactation. Results: sex of the calf and second and third PO had an effect on nursing behavior (p<0.05). DMP and TMP were significantly affected by calf sex and nursing behaviour (p<0.05). PO had no effect on DMP and TMP. Conclusion: our results suggest that nursing behaviour is associated with milk production in buffalo cows. Buffalo cows that accept all types of nursing behaviour had the highest DMP and TMP. Sex of the calf influenced nursing behaviour, DMP, and TMP, so that buffalo cows with male calves displayed more frequent allonursing behaviour and yielded more milk.

The aim of the present study was to investigate if river buffalo calves (Bubalus bubalis) have equal access to all cows and if milk is thus equally available to all of them. We recorded suckling/allosuckling behaviour and weight gain (WG) of 29 calves (14 males and 15 females), with special consideration to their sex, birth order (B0) and age. Cows' nursing behaviour and milk production (MP) were also considered. While males tended to be bom earlier than females during this study, this was not the trend in the overall herd records. The cows' MP was not effected by the calves' sex. However, bull-calves presented greater mean WG, and mean times spent in individual filial (IF) and in communal nonfilial (CNF) suckling than heifer-calves, which showed greater communal filial (CF) suckling than the former during the first 4 months of life. The WG was associated with IF for bull-calves (r = 0.680 and 0.765, respectively, for the periods from birth to 4th and 8th months of age), and to CNF for heifer-calves (r = 0.628, for the period from birth to 8th month). Results from multiple regression analysis showed independent effects of each suckling category on the calf WG, and such effects were variable according to the calf's sex. BO was negatively correlated to calves' WG (bull-calves: r s = -0.873 and -0.799, from birth to 4th and 8th months, respectively; heifer-calves: r s = -0.531 from birth to 4th month). Specifically for bull-calves, there was a positive correlation between BO and MP (r s = 0.528 and 0.633, from birth to 4th and 8th months of age, respectively). The correlation between BO and IF was negative in both sexes, indicating that calves that were born early had more opportunities to suckle individually from their mothers. For heifer-calves, BO was positively correlated with CF (two periods), and negatively with CNF (from birth to 8th month of age), suggesting that heifer-calves were most often accompanied by other calves during suckling when they were bom later. The data taken together indicate that sex and/or BO influenced decisively social interactions during suckling, promoting differential development among the calves. In animal husbandry, if a homogenous WG is desired, these factors have to be taken into consideration.

Nursing and sucking behaviour in buffalos in relation to lactation period, age and calf sexThe objectives of the present study were to investigate the frequency and duration of nursing behaviour in female buffalos during the lactation period and the types of suckling behaviour in relation to age and calf sex. Thirty-five females with their calves were observed during three consecutive days in each month, over a period of nine months. The nursing behaviour was characterized as isolated filial nursing (IFN); collective filial nursing (CFN) and nonfilial nursing (NFN). The suckling behaviour was classified as isolated filial suckling (IFS); collective filial suckling on their own mothers (CFS1); collective filial suckling on other females (CFS2) and nonfilial suckling (NFS). Data were analyzed by analysis of variance and means were compared by the Tukey test considering P<0,05. IFN showed frequency and duration higher than the other types of the nursing (P<0,05), with predominance in almost all period of lactation.The frequency of IFS was high mainly in the first month and the duration of IFS was higher than other types of suckling until the fifth month (P<0,05) In relation to calf sex, no significant differences (P>0,05) were found for the means of frequency and duration of the types of sucking. The results show that the buffalo females have larger innate aptitude Objetivou-se neste trabalho investigar a frequência e a duração dos tipos de amamentações durante o período de lactação em fêmeas bubalinas e os tipos de mamadas em relação à idade e ao sexo dos bezerros. Trinta e cinco fêmeas e seus bezerros foram observados durante três dias consecutivos a cada mês, ao longo de nove meses. A amamentação foi caracterizada como: amamentação filial isolada (AFI), amamentação filial coletiva (AFC) e amamentação não-filial (ANF). As mamadas executadas pelos bezerros foram caracterizadas como: mamada filial isolada (MFI), mamada filial coletiva na própria mãe (MFC1), mamada filial coletiva em outra fêmea (MCF2) e mamada não-filial (MNF). Os dados foram analisados pela análise de variância, e as médias foram comparadas pelo teste Tukey, considerando P < 0,05. A AFI apresentou frequência e duração maiores do que os outros tipos de amamentações (P < 0,05), sendo predominante em quase todo o período de lactação. A frequência da MFI foi alta, principalmente no primeiro mês. A duração foi maior quando comparada aos outros tipos de mamadas até o quinto mês (P < 0,05). Em relação ao sexo dos bezerros não foram encontradas diferenças significativas (P > 0,05) para as médias da frequência e a duração dos tipos de mamadas. Os resultados mostram que as fêmeas bubalinas têm maior aptidão inata para a AFI em relação aos outros tipos de amamentações, predominando durante quase todo o período de lactação.
