The variety engineering method: analyzing and designing information flows in organizations

Abstract: In every organization, various decisions have to be made continuously, from the simple choice, which customer order to be processed next, to the serious question, whether to select a new supplier or to cancel an existing one. All of these decisions are supported by the provision of relevant information. Therefore the efficiency of a value chain is strongly influenced by the accurate setup of information flows. To make organizations more effective and efficient, one needs to understand what information flows ar… Show more

“…In order to obtain a comprehensive knowledge of existing process landscape in a public administration, large numbers of potential reengineering candidates have to be analyzed. The bottom-up process analysis employed by many BPR-related approaches [42] is very expensive and time-consuming. Hence, we posit that a top-down approach [41,43] is needed in order to account for the special needs of the domain of public administration.…”

“…A system is viable if it is able to maintain a separate existence over time. We do not discuss the VSM in detail here, as detailed descriptions of the VSM, its components, and its application are given, for example, in Beer (1979, 1981, 1985), Espejo and Harnden (1989), Espejo et al (1996), Schwaninger (2006), or Rosenkranz and Holten (2010).…”

“…It has been shown that design science has the ability to construct a method design and to analyse, and diagnose information flows in an organization (Rosenkranz & Holten, 2011). Here, the authors demonstrate design methods that can be used for business management.…”
