To obtain a diagnosis of general aspects of research in family medicine residents. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out from October 2016 to March 2017; a survey of 20 questions was applied to family medicine residents in Mexico City, information related to research development was collected. Results: 331 residents from the 3 academic grades participated. 180 residents (54.3%) mentioned having previously training investigation research, 135 (75%) of those indicated that the training was not effective. 126 (38%) indicated not knowing family medicine journals in Spanish, and 222 (67%) in English language; 215 residents (64.9%) reported having difficulties to critical appraisal articles. 137 residents (41.3%) reported having difficulties in conducting research. Conclusions: Most family medicine, residents indicated that they do not have enough knowledge to carry out research, as well as to evaluate scientific documents. The residents expressed an interest in carrying out and disseminating the results of their research, however, they require academic support to carry out these tasks.
