The Value of Sunflower Seed Oil Meal as a Protein Supplement for Laying Hens

Abstract: Two experiments, involving 324 pullets confined to individual cages and 630 pullets in floor pens, were conducted to determine the value of commercial sunflower seed oil meal as the major protein supplement in laying rations. In rations containing 2.0 or 2.5 per cent fish meal, the complete replacement of other supplementary protein sources with sunflower seed oil meal had no influence on mortality, egg production, egg weight or body weight maintenance. However, feed consumption tended to be higher when meat me… Show more

“…This is contrary to reports by Rose et al, (1972), Walter et al (1959) and Deaton et al, (1979); however, none of their experiments involved pullets from 12 to 20 weeks of age. The diets varied from 2804 to 2938 kcal/kg.…”

“…All-mash rations containing SM were successfully used for laying hens in experiments reported by Walter et al (1959). The complete replacement of meat meal or soybean meal with SM in diets containing 2.0 and 2.5% fish meal had no adverse effect on egg production, egg weight, or maintenance of body weight.…”

“…Also using mash-grain rations, Hale and Brown (1957) concluded that sunflower seed meal was satis-factory for egg production, but they realized that rations high in sunflower seed meal were also high in fiber and low in energy. In all-mash rations for laying hens, Walter et al (1959) completely replaced meat meal or soybean meal with sunflower meal. They observed no influence on egg production, egg weight, or maintenance of body weight when those diets included 2.0 or 2.5% fish meal.…”
