“…As shown in Appendix Table 2, 19 of our participants reported "severe depression or anxiety" and that was never reported in the van Nispen et al study's top ten health states. Another additional explanation for the difference between studies is that lower EQ-5D-3L utility indices are expected in Portugal than in the Netherlands because of differences in (Ferreira et al 2014). …”

“…Health utilities are used to provide estimates of the overall value of health states to the individual and/or to society and are used in cost-utility analyses. To simplify data collection, all likely combinations of ratings of the five items in the EQ-5D-3L, each of which represents a different health state, have been mapped to community-based health utilities by a representative sample of the community population using a time trade-off method (Ferreira et al 2014). Therefore, the EQ-5D-3L can be administered as a rating scale questionnaire and a utility tariff, corresponding to the pattern of responses to the 5 items, can be looked up in a table (or estimated from an algorithm).…”

“…The global index is generated by an algorithm, based on the preferences of the answers obtained for the five dimensions. The EQ-5D uses a scale from 1 (perfect health) to 0 (death), admitting, however, negative values corresponding to health states considered worse than death [1,20,22]. Data were collected between January 2013 and January 2014.…”

“…More recently, the value system and the normative data of the EQ-5D-3L were established for the Portuguese population [22,23].…”
