The validity of Keiser-M3 stationary bicycle with standard ergometer for physiological measurements associated with maximum effort

Abstract: This study aims to investigate the concordance between two cycle ergometers for variables measured in the test of maximum incremental effort. Methods: This correlation study enrolled 15 inactive women (19,2 ± 4,0 years old). At random, the participants performed two maximal effort incremental tests (MEIT), using cycle ergometers (Keiser-M3 and Ergo-167) on different days with a minimum interval of 72 hours. The test had stages of two minutes, and two-step increments were carried out at the end of each stage. L… Show more

“…The participants were instructed to restrict their intake of food and drinks that included caffeine and alcohol and to avoid physical exercise 24 h before the experiment. The experiment was carried out on three consecutive days between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., and the measurements were performed in environmentally controlled conditions: (21)(22)(23) • C [18][19][20].…”

“…After finishing the first phase, the participants were included in the physical exercise phase with submaximal effort. For this phase, a Keiser-M3 (Keiser™, Chicago, IL, USA) spinning bike ergometer was used, which represents an alternative to standard cycle ergometers [21]. In this study, physical exercise is defined according to the modified Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) test protocol for submaximal effort, which was modified by adding two additional phases of 3 min in duration with an equivalent increase in resistance (Figure 1, Table 2) [22].…”

“…In order to be evaluated, the participants should present themselves adequately fed, having had their last meal between 60 min and 90 min before physical effort, and slept between 8 h and 10 h the night before, in addition to having not practiced high-intensity effort over the previous 24 h. Laboratory conditions were maintained constant, at 21 °C and 60% relative humidity (Veiga et al, 2020).…”
