The utility of the hematoxylin and eosin staining in patients with suspected Hirschsprung disease

Abstract: BackgroundWhile immunohistochemistry (IHC) methods have been widely conducted for the diagnosis of Hirschsprung disease (HSCR) in developed countries, there are very few studies on their use in developing countries where hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining is a key element of the diagnosis of HSCR. We aimed to determine the accuracy of HE staining in the diagnosis of HSCR using S100 IHC as the reference standard in Indonesia.MethodsAll histopathology performed for the suspicion of HSCR patients from January 20… Show more

“…Moreover, our study did not aim to determine the accuracy of contrast enema for diagnosis of HSCR since all HSCR patients in our hospital were diagnosed using full thickness biopsy samples stained by HE and S100 [11]. Our study's focus was on prediction of intraoperative aganglionosis level using contrast enema for HSCR patients with short-segment aganglionosis who underwent TEPT, since most HSCR patients are short-segment aganglionosis and currently they often undergo TEPT [2].…”

“…Even though immunohistochemistry techniques are widely used for the diagnosis of HD in developed countries, hematoxylin–eosin staining presents a moderate reliability for this diagnosis, but it can be used in case of the lack of more expensive immunohistochemistry techniques. [ 19 ] A recent study underlined that the histological examination of the appendix is a very useful tool in the diagnosis of TCA. [ 13 ]…”
