The usefulness of new serum tumor markers in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: The combined determination of active MMP-13 and p53 autoantibodies could improve diagnosis of lymphatic metastasis in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma and aid therapeutic decision making.

“…This study demonstrates a correlation of nuclear MMP-13 expression with invasion depth, tumor size, and DSS in OTSCC. Our results regarding tissue expression of MMP-13 in OTSCC strengthen and extend the findings of Marcos et al (38) demonstrating that elevated serum MMP-13 levels can be considered a potential tumor biomarker in HNSCC. Overall, MMP-13 may be a prognostic biomarker of tongue cancer, but further studies including tumors from other head and neck sites are needed to verify its role in clinical use.…”

“…Somewhat surprisingly, MMP‐13 upregulation has also been shown to correlate significantly with well‐differentiated histology in squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx, but also with advanced local invasion of the tumor, although the correlation was previously found only at mRNA levels (37). Upregulation of serum levels of MMP‐13 and a correlation between active MMP‐13 and lymph node metastasis have been demonstrated in patients with HNSCC (38).…”

“…Serum LDH is used in the clinic to determine the metastatic spread of melanoma and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma; however, it tends to be nonspecific (35). Some potential diagnostic serum markers for HNSCC have been identified, such as IL-6, to monitor the development of secondary primary cancer (36), MMP-13 to diagnose lymphatic metastasis in HNSCC (37), and hypoxia-related factors to predict recurrence in HPV-negative HNSCC patients (38). While advances in serum markers may contribute to better HNSCC diagnosis, our data suggest that elevation of serum C 18 -ceramide might be a novel biomarker for monitoring response to therapy.…”

“…Previous reports [8] assumed a functional role for MMPs and TIMPs in the diseases related with upper airway system such as chronic otitis media with effusion [9], cholesteatoma [10], chronic sinusitis [11], nasal polyp formation [7], inverted papilloma [12], adenoid hypertrophy [13] and various head and neck cancers [14][15][16]. However, there is insufficient knowledge concerning the relationship between MMPs and their inhibitors (TIMPs) in children with recurrent tonsillitis.…”
