The Use of Water Soluble Polymers for the Pre-Concentration and Separation of Copper, Lead, and Chromium Prior to Their Determination by Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry

Abstract: In this study, a water-soluble polymer, polyacrylamide containing R-(þ)-Cysteine end groups was used for the separation and preconcentration of copper, lead and chromium prior to their analysis by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. The sample and polymer solution were mixed and metal-bound polymer was precipitated 1075 upon addition of acetone. The precipitate was separated from solution and dissolved directly with distilled water. By this way, analyte elements were again transferred into the liq… Show more

“…This means that nickel is quantitatively recovered with high precision and the kinetics of the complex reaction is fast. The similar results were reported in other water-soluble 2+ 14.8 [33] polymer-acetone systems for the pre-concentration and separation of metals [19][20][21][22][23].…”

“…For example, Bakırcıoglu et al [19] described the use of polyacrylic acid for the determination of Cu 2+ , Cd 2+ and Zn 2+ . Özcan et al [20] investigated the use of polyacrylamide containing R-(+)-cystein end groups for the determination of Cu 2+ , Pb 2+ and Cr 3+ . Other water-soluble polymers such as poly(vinyl pyrrolidinone) for the determination of lead, copper, manganese, nickel and cobalt [21,22] and polyethylenimine for the determination of copper and manganese [23] had been investigated in detail.…”

“…Polyacrylamides which are soluble in water and contain thioglycolic acid end groups were synthesized. Such polymers prepared with Ce(IV)-organic reducing agent redox system and containing amino, hydroxyl, carboxylic and thiol functional groups or end groups seem to be potential sources for the synthesis of high molecular weight polymers that can be destroyed under physiological conditions due to occurring weakly bound structure in polymer and to have potential for the preconcentration and separation of some trace elements [25][26][27][28][29].…”

“…The adsorption and % removal of trace metal ions were estimated from the difference between the initial concentration of metal ions C 0 and the recovery concentration Ce according to Eq. (1) and (2). The flow rate and sample volume were optimized and tested in column.…”

“…Toxicity of heavy metal ions such as copper, Lead and zinc consider a big environmental pollution problem where there are many sources of this metal ions like soils, industrial wastes and geological samples [1] Flame and graphite furnace absorption spectrometry techniques used for determination concentration of this metal ions at low concentration directly [2]. Low cost and efficiency of the use of solid phase extraction technology have become more common for the analysis of the components of samples in high and low concentrations.…”
