The Use of V.A.C. VERAFLO CLEANSE CHOICE in the Burn Population

Abstract: Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is routinely used in the treatment of acute and chronic wounds. The technology continues to evolve with improved results NPWT is routinely used at the Arizona Burn Center and the addition of the V.A.C. VERAFLO CLEANSE CHOICETM with its reticulated open foam device has been used with promising results in a variety of complicated wounds. We present a case series involving the use of this negative pressure wound therapy device and irrigation in burn and necrotizing soft tiss… Show more

“…In a series of case reports, opting for a VERAFLO cleanse combined with instillation therapy resulted in faster closure of the wound in the burn or necrotizing soft tissue infection patient populations. 42 Another study demonstrated that the combination of NPWTi-d with this reticulated open-cell foam dressing helps the formation of granulation tissue and could potentially represent a cost-effective way of reducing surgical debridement. 43 Closed Incision Negative-Pressure Therapy NPWT can also be applied to a primary closed surgical wound to improve its healing and reduce its vulnerability to complications.…”

“…Further, with a pH of 5.5, applications are gentle and well tolerated 27 . It can be delivered as a soak, wound packing, and in combination with NPWT as an instill-dwell solution to treat a variety of wounds and burns 29,30 . In addition, HOCl solution is effective in treating various species of Candida and bacteria, including Bacillus anthracis , Clostridium difficile , methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus , P aeruginosa , and E coli biofilms 25,31,32 .…”

“…VERAFLO CLEANSE CHOICE), a new device of NPWT, is a reticulated open cell foam dressing that was designed for the instillation of a solution in order to lavage the wound bed. 15 NPWT with instillation of antimicrobials achieved significant reductions in S. aureus biofilm thickness and mass in vitro. 16 Previous experiment in pigs indicated that NPWT with delivery of active antimicrobial agents enhanced the reduction of CFUs by increasing destruction and removal of biofilm bacteria.…”
