Abstract: In June 2016, the United Kingdom held a referendum on EU membership; 52% of those who voted, voted to leave, and 48% voted to remain. During the referendum campaign, two identities emerged: "Brexiter" and "Remainer," which remained salient post-referendum. “…The old are either wise or selfish, the young indoctrinated or judicious. These invocations of age as a social identity resemble Meredith and Richardson's (2019) account of the emergence of "Brexiteer" and "Remainer" identities during the EU referendum. The referendum was a democratic vote and efforts to delegitimate it by calling it racist were seen as assaults on the majority’s democratic decision.…”

“…However, Brexit has produced its own form of online political mud-slinging and name calling, in which one group or another has asserted its right to address opponents in a particular manner. It was observed that 'Brexiters' exercised their bragging rights by labelling dissatisfied losers of the referendum 'Remoaners' (Meredith and Richardson, 2019). Assigning labels came no less easily to elected representatives in Parliament.…”
