The Use of Swimmer Bars as Shear Reinforcement in Reinforced Concrete Beam

Abstract: The behavior of reinforced concrete beams at failure by shear is distinctly different from their behavior by bending, which is considered to be unsafe mode of failure. The shear failure of beams is usually sudden without sufficient advanced warning and the diagonal cracks that develop due to excess shear forces are considerably wider than the flexural cracks. The cost and safety of shear reinforcement in reinforced concrete beams led to the study of other alternatives. Swimmer bar system is a new type of shear… Show more

“…Stirrups are used mightily at the high shear zones. The cost and time required for stirrups installation depended on the congestion near the supports of the reinforced concrete beams [1][2][3]. The swimmer bar system is considered a new technique of shear reinforcement.…”

“…Wind energy has become the most promising green energy compared to traditional sources. The foundation of Offshore Wind Turbines (OWT) represents the predominant item for this structure type regarding both cost and installation procedure, especially when construction in zones of deeper seawater or when the increasing distance to shore [1], [2]. Also, the construction of the foundation represents the major number of materials and generates most of the CO2 emissions in cement production [3].…”

“…Swimmer bars were used effectively to improve the shear strength of the reinforced concrete beams [10,11]. Several attempts to replace the welds in the swimmer bars due to the uncertainty in the performance of the welds n the log run were explored [12.13].…”
