THE USE OF PROSTAGLANDIN E2 IN THE MANAGEMENT OF INTRAUTERINE DEATH, MISSED ABORTION AND HYDATIDIFORM MOLE

Abstract: Intravenous infusion of prostaglandin E, was used successfully to evacuate the uterus in seven cases of intrauterine death, five cases of missed abortion and one case of hydatidiform mole. Haemorrhage associated with hypofibrinogenaemia occurred in one patient with an intrauterine death.

“…Brummer (1971) and Gillespie (1972) suggested that the prior administration of prostaglandin E, (PGE2) enhanced the uterine response to subsequently administered oxytocin. Other workers showed PGs to be effective in the induction of labour in unfavourable conditions (Anderson et al, 1971;Calder and Embrey, 1973;Filshie, 1971 ;Friedman and Sachtleben, 1974;Karim et al, 1970). Karim and Sharma (1972) showed the length of labour following P G administration to be shortened.…”

“…Karim (1970) and Filshie (1971) have each reported the successful termination of pregnancy in one patient with a hydatidiform mole by intravenous PGE, infusion. It appeared that if the gestation sac remained intact, then the abortion was more likely to be complete whereas, if the sac ruptured in labour, then the placenta tended to be retained.…”

Karim (1970) and Filshie (1971) have each reported the successful termination of pregnancy in one patient with a hydatidiform mole by intravenous PGE, infusion. We have managed five patients in a manner similar to that employed with missed abortions and found that the results were equally satisfactory.…”
