“…Adjunctive mitomycin has been used both intraoperatively and postoperatively to prevent pterygium recurrence and to prevent scarring associated with glaucoma filtration surgery [6,21,34]. It has also been used to treat squamous conjunctival neoplasia, sebaceous gland carcinoma with conjunctival epithelial invasion, recurrent conjunctival papilloma and ocular pemphigoid [7,11,22,32,35,38].…”

“…The decision to begin adjuvant therapy must take into consideration the therapeutic benefits and potential side effects. Various modalities, such as surgical removal, laser photocoagulation, 16 IFN-a, 5,8-10 mitomycin C, 7 and dinitrochlorobenzene immunotherapy 17 have been reported, but no single treatment modality has proven effective in eradicating recurrent papillomatosis without the introduction of conjunctival scarring. IFN is usually not considered effective for treating large, solid tumors without surgical debulking.…”

“…An incomplete excision can stimulate growth and lead to a recurrence of the lesion and a worse cosmetic outcome. (Fig.14) Topical interferon-alpha 2b (Schechter et al 2002;Kothari et al 2009) and mitomycin C (Hawkins et al 1999;Yuen et al 2002) have been employed in the treatment of conjunctival papilloma. Immunomodulating agents such as oral cimetidine have led to regression of viral related papilloma.…”
