“…In fact, abandoned low sulfide Pb-Zn tailings are considered in some Moroccan regions as natural sands and has been extensively used, since the nineties, for the manufacture of surface finishing renders without any control, engineering basis or environmental evaluation (Argane et al 2014). The obtained results could as well be used for understanding the behavior of cemented pastfill (when using Pb-Zn tailings), which has become a common practice in many modern mining operations around the world (Benzaazoua et al 2004). …”

“…Varieties of new cementitious materials [1] were recently proposed as binders for the stabilization of tailings and for the backfi lling process as a replacement of Portland cement, however, none of which was practically and satisfactorily used in real backfi lling engineering cases. On the other hand, it has been noticed recently that zinc-lead tailings contains some arsenic bearing minerals which will be oxidized and decomposed and then as a result be dissolved into underground water after a series of artificial treatment such as exploitation, finely grinding and backfi lling operation [2] . Unfortunately, the stabilization effect by Portland cement, not only the mechanically solidification effect for its strength development but also the chemically stabilization effect for the arsenic bearing minerals to be firmly fixed within the matrix of the hardened tailings-cement paste, was so far questioned.…”
