The Use of Method Triangulation in Probation Research

Abstract: Qualitative research in probation is predominantly interview-based. This article explores the use of method triangulation in Belgian probation research. At first, a methodological question remains: is the use of a wider range of methods better? Or is it simply more? Drawing from the author's experience in researching Belgian probation officers' daily work, the article concludes that using method triangulation (file analyses, interviews and observations) is a valuable approach that does not merely duplicate da… Show more

“…Method triangulation means to gather information pertaining to the same phenomenon through more than one method, primarily to determine if there is a convergence and hence, increased validity in the findings (Carugi, 2016;Kopinak, 1999). Triangulation enables examination of similarities and discrepancies in a research topic, and the assessment of socially desirable responding in sensitive and complex topics (Bauwens, 2010). In addition, it allows researchers to strive for completeness and confirmation of research findings (Yeasmin & Rahman, 2012) as weaknesses in one method can be counterbalanced by the strength in others (Carugi, 2016;Kopinak, 1999).…”

“…In addition, criminal records were consulted to explore if self-reported offending came to the attention of the criminal justice system. Data triangulation in parole research can be of added value in unravelling inconsistencies and offering additional understanding from another data source [3].…”

“…Even though correctional workers align with one role orientation more closely than another, in practice their behavior may not match their perceived role in every situation (Bauwens, 2010; Lynch, 1998). For example, Bauwens (2010) found differences between how POs behave when interacting with probationers and how they believe they carried out their role. In addition, Lynch (1998), in response to Feeley and Simon’s (1992) New Penology , argued that there may be a discrepancy between the organization and individual approach to roles.…”
