The use of feathers of birds of prey as indicators of metal pollution

Abstract: Published results concerning metal levels in feathers of birds of prey were listed and evaluated. Mercury concentrations have been studied most and the background values normally vary between 0.1 and 5 mg/kg dry weight the highest concentrations being in birds from aquatic food chains. Pollution causes elevated levels of mercury in feathers. The concentrations of cadmium, copper, lead and zinc show reasonable variation between species, areas and time periods. Feathers of birds of prey have proved to be good in… Show more

“…Chromium, as well as Hg, Cu, As, and Se have a high affinity for keratin [19], which may explain the higher concentrations of Cr in caracaras feathers in this research. High concentrations of Cr in tissues are only observed when body's homeostasis malfunctions and Cr is assimilated beyond what is necessary for nutrition, causing intoxication [27].…”

“…Similarly, Cr is present in parts of industrial processes, which lead to contaminating the environment [26]. In their study, a high correlation between Cu and Cr (r = 0.80; P < 0.0001) was found, which may be due to the high affinity of keratin for these elements [19].…”

“…Les plumes d'oiseaux sont souvent utilisées pour surveiller les concentrations de mercure dans les écosystèmes terrestres et aquatiques (Dauwe et collab., 2003;Lodenius et Solonen, 2013). Facilement recueillies, les plumes peuvent être prélevées sans nuire à la santé de l'oiseau.…”
