The Use of a Computer in an Obstetric Department

Abstract: Experience with a computer in an obstetric department is presented. A regular statistical analysis of the work of the department was readily available and computer printed summaries were produced for 86 per cent of the patients within one week of their discharge home. Solutions to problems encountered are discussed. It is concluded that a computer can be used economically and advantageously in this way even in hospitals without a computer on site. Future developments in the use of the computer are outlined. AND Show more

“…Obstetricians have always been in the forefront in auditing their work and many have used mainframe computers for retrospective analysis of their data. Nevertheless, mainframe systems have been used for routine batch production of obstetric discharge summaries which have been found acceptable to general practitioners (South 1972;Tuck et al 1976). “…These systems have been troubled by incomplete and incorrect data recording, which can only be remedied by tedious reprocessing of notes (South & Thomson & Barron 1980). Nevertheless, mainframe systems have been used for routine batch production of obstetric discharge summaries which have been found acceptable to general practitioners (South 1972;Tuck et al 1976). Large-scale perinatal data systems have been used extensively in America with production of summaries and audit (Chik & Sokol 1981) although the methods used to obtain high-quality data are frequently not clear.…”
