The Usability of Online Geographic Virtual Reality for Urban Planning

Abstract: Virtual reality (VR) technology is starting to become widely and freely available (for example the online OpenSimulator tool), with potential for use in 3D urban planning and design tasks but still needing rigorous assessment to establish this. A previous study consulted with a small group of urban professionals, who concluded in a satisfaction usability test that online VR had potential value as a usable 3D communication and remote marketing tool but acknowledged that visual quality and geographic accuracy we… Show more

“…Over the past two decades, online visualisation has been rapidly developed and widely used for environmental preference studies (e.g., Bishop, 2012;Fu et al, 2005;Smith et al, 2012;Zhang & Moore, 2014). It has been shown that generally reliable landscape perceptions can be achieved with online visualisation (Roth, 2006;Wherrett, 2000).…”

“…Therefore, training of willpower plays a very important part in the daily training. This kind of training is also known as imaginary training (Zhang, 2014), which is a method of thinking and control. Players complete the training by imagining or recalling some kind of technical movements, including the key points of movement, order of movements, method and time, causing corresponding neuromuscular changes.…”

“…It is essential for investigating and monitoring the most important geomorphological features of natural areas. The rich potential of 3D rendering is also utilized in areas that rely on geographical data, for example, evacuation planning [1], geospatial data exploration and analysis [2][3][4], navigation in urban areas [5,6], visualization of spatial data quality [7], educational games [8], and urban planning [9]. It is also possible to use the interaction between other digital information for 3D terrain rendering for disaster prediction and in (geographic) education.…”
