The unknown face of labial salivary glands. Labial salivary gland biopsy as a diagnostic tool

Abstract: Labial salivary gland biopsy (LSGB) is a minimally invasive and safe surgical procedure performed in the diagnosis and monitoring of selected diseases such as Sjögren's syndrome (SS), sarcoidosis, and amyloidosis. The aim of this study is to present the main possibilities and indications for the usefulness of LSGB in these diseases, their histopathological criteria, and the main advantages and limitations. Histopathological confirmation of SS is based on the presence of lymphocytic infiltrates, known as focal … Show more

“…Xerostomia leads to the development of opportunistic infections and oral mucosal manifestations in the oral cavity. It can correspond to selected inflammatory and diagnostic factors of the disease’s severity and to histopathological changes in salivary glands [ 15 17 ]. However, xerostomia is often less severe in IgG4-RD than in SS and it is usually sensitive to immunosuppressive and steroid therapy [ 5 , 18 ].…”

“…Minor salivary gland biopsy such as LSG biopsy may sometimes be substituted when biopsy of the major salivary glands is difficult. The sensitivity of detection of IgG4+plasma cells in LSG specimens is relatively low [37,38]. The utility of the parotid gland in diagnosing IgG4-RD has not been reported so far.…”

“…It results from simply surgical approach of labial salivary glands. 45,46 Another diagnostic criterium is a positive Schirmer's test result, which is less than 5 mm in 5 minutes, indicates dry eyes. 2,8 The American-European Consensus Group SS criteria is widely used and include six criteria: 1) dry eyes, 2) dry mouth, 3) positive result of Schirmer's test, 4) labial minor salivary gland biopsy, 5) reduced salivary flow or diffuse sialectasias, and 6) positive result of autoantibodies SSA or SSB.…”
