Mikulicz’s disease and Sjögren’s syndrome as the main autoimmune disorders involving salivary glands

Abstract: Mikulicz's disease and Sjögren's syndrome involve salivary glands. They are characterised by lymphocytic infiltrations in affected exocrine glands leading to their swelling and dysfunction. Although they present similar clinical symptoms, currently they belong to different classifications and require different multidisciplinary treatments. This study presents and compares Sjögren's syndrome and Mikulicz's disease and reviews their main clinical, histopathological, and serologic criteria and the methods used in… Show more

“…Sjogren's syndrome (SS) is a chronic inflammatory, autoimmune disease of the exocrinopathy type that mainly involves the salivary and lacrimal glands. It is characterized by the presence of focal lymphocytic inflammatory infiltrations in target tissues termed in salivary glands as focal lymphocytic sialadenitis (FLS), which lead to its main clinical manifestation that is dry mouth [1,2]. Xerostomia decreases general oral health and predisposes to tooth caries.…”

“…Patients with MD respond well to glucocorticosteroids treatment; however, too rapid dose reduction leads to recurrence of disease symptoms. Thus, the recommended period of dose reduction is between 3 and 6 months ( 13 ). It is of utmost importance to note that the clinical picture of MD becomes clearer with the duration of the disease; hence symptomatology at an early stage of the disease may be incomplete.…”

“…It is of utmost importance to note that the clinical picture of MD becomes clearer with the duration of the disease; hence symptomatology at an early stage of the disease may be incomplete. This causes additional difficulties in establishing the correct diagnosis ( 13 ). In the current case, SS was suspected on several occasions.…”
