The Unispacer knee implant

Abstract: The Unispacer knee system is a cobalt-chrome self-centring tibial hemiarthroplasty device for use in the treatment of isolated medial compartment osteoarthritis of the knee. The indications for use are similar to those for high tibial osteotomy, but insertion does not require bone cuts or component fixation, and does not compromise future knee replacement surgery. A prospective study of a consecutive series of 18 patients treated with the Unispacer between June 2003 and August 2004 was carried out to determine… Show more

“…However, the lack of appropriate fixation resulted in an unacceptably high number of device dislocations and revision surgeries. 7577 Extra-capsular (non-articular) medial compartment knee load absorber implants are currently under evaluation in clinical trials that require only a subcutaneous incision and provide device fixation at the medial distal femoral cortex and the medial proximal tibial cortex to achieve significant offloading of the medical compartment. 78,79 Continued advancements in minimally invasive, joint offloading medical devices for knee OA treatment are intriguing, especially given the overall failure of conservative management to improve symptoms or halt disease progression.…”

“…Clinically high dislocation rates have been reported in the literature at time intervals as early as 6 months after surgery [11, 12]. The unispacer represented a new concept of a free floating interpositional metallic implant that actively translates in anteroposterior direction and rotates with knee flexion and extension.…”

“…The unispacer represented a new concept of a free floating interpositional metallic implant that actively translates in anteroposterior direction and rotates with knee flexion and extension. The reported failure rates have resulted in limited, if any, use of the device today [11]. …”
