The Unique Geoheritage of the Kachchh (Kutch) Basin, Western India, and its Conservation

Abstract: The Kachchh Basin is a peri-cratonic rift basin in the Gujarat state of Western India which exposes a vast range of geological features which are of great importance for basic and applied research by geoscientists. The fossil-rich stratigraphy of the Kachchh Basin represents the past 200 million years of geological history from the Jurassic Period to the present day, including through the Neogene Period. Both Mesozoic and Cenozoic sequences are highly fossiliferous with a variety of mega, macro, and microfossi… Show more

“…SWOT analysis: SWOT analysis was carried out in line with the data obtained from the literature surveys [38][39][40][41] and field studies and observations determined on site. In addition, the studies of Özgeriş and Karahan [33] and Chauhan [56] were taken as references.…”

“…The SWOT analysis was carried out in line with the literature surveys, field studies and observations determined on site. Moreover, the studies of Özgeriş and Karahan [33] and Chauhan [56] were used. The SWOT analysis of Guzelcehisar is given in Table 1.…”

“…The Tertiary marine sediments, about 900 m(+) thick, were deposited in the post-rift marginal sag basin, as discussed above (Biswas 2016a). Certain Tertiary sections of Kutch are the only remaining reference sections of the particular stage globally (Shekhar et al 2019;Chauhan et al 2021). The Tertiary succession of the Kutch Basin also provides an outcrop analog for reservoir rocks of the Western Offshore oil field (Shekhar et al 2019).…”

“…Ancient anchor stones and old coins found buried in Rann sediment around Pachham Island and adjacent Kuar Bet suggest that in archaeological times when the Great Rann of Kachchh was inundated by the sea forming a gulf, and overseas traders used to visit India in their vessels and to dock their ships at these places. By virtue of its typical landscape, excellent preservation potential (archaeological sites), and rich cultural heritage, the Kutch peninsula holds strong potential to qualify for being one of the important archeological heritage sites in India (Chauhan et al 2021).…”

“…One way to document and envisage these palaeoenvironmental changes is through integrated multiproxy studies. In Kachchh Basin, the Holocene sediments are well‐preserved in the Great Rann and Little Rann (Chauhan, Biswas, Thakkar, & Page, 2021; Maurya, Thakkar, & Chamyal, 2003a). In the present day, the low‐lying flat topography of the Ranns of Kachchh experiences marine influence from the western side, while at times, fluvial discharge dominates the eastern side.…”
