The Unidirectional Barbed Suture for Renorrhaphy During Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy: Stanford Experience

Abstract: The use of V-Loc sutures for renorrhaphy during LPN is safe and feasible and, in our series, significantly reduces WIT. Further studies are needed to corroborate these findings, but these results indicate a promising development in reducing WIT during minimally invasive partial nephrectomy.

“…Barbed sutures have been used for to close cystotomies as well as iatrogenic damage to the bladder, vesicourethral anastomosis in robotic prostatectomy, renorrhaphy in partial nephrectomy, myomectomy closure, and closure of the vaginal cuff following hysterectomy. 1,[28][29][30] In sheep, barbed sutures were were satisfactory to re-approximate the uterus after C-section, but were associated with incisional dehiscence when used to close the abdominal fascia. 31 Contact between barbed sutures and other materials (eg, surgical gauze, drapes, etc) is contraindicated, raising concerns over the development of internal adhesions between the suture and surrounding surfaces.…”

“…To date, the efficacy of this new material has been evaluated in different surgical fields, a few general surgery studies are available [12][13][14][15][16][17][18], gynecologists have also demonstrated its utilities [19][20][21], oncologists have reported advantages in its properties [22] and urology is the field where its usefulness is already a standard and concentrates most of its reports [23][24][25][26][27].…”
