The uncertainty of diameter calibrations with the comparator for diameter and form

Abstract: The PTB's new comparator for diameter and form was investigated and optimized with the aim of reducing step by step the uncertainty of outer diameter measurements to U = 10 nm per 100 mm measuring length. This paper presents the measurement procedure, an error analysis and results of outer diameter measurements on a cylindrical standard of a pressure balance.

“…According the GUM, the uncertainty in diameter measurement is calculated by applying the law of propagation of uncertainty [9] to equation (1). Since the same displacement sensors are used for the measurement of the gauge block and diameter specimen, the measured displacement values are partially correlated, and their correlated and uncorrelated components are well analyzed in [5]. The magnitude of each uncertainty component can be estimated through some experiments or referencing related materials.…”

“…Some laboratories apply a coordinate measuring machine to diameter measurements, but its performance is usually limited because it is not specially designed for the calibration of diameter standards. Therefore, several national metrology institutes (NMIs) designed and fabricated their own calibration system using a laser interferometer [2][3][4][5][6].…”

“…The pressure is defined as the ratio of the total downward gravitational force to the A 0 , where A 0 is most commonly determined through a comparison against another DWPB or a mercury manometer, although dimensional characterizations have also been used [5][6][7][8][9]. The fact that the force can be measured with greater accuracy than area is well known.…”
