The True Incidence of Gastric GIST—a Study Based on Morbidly Obese Patients Undergoing Sleeve Gastrectomy

Abstract: The incidence of GIST found in this cohort is significantly higher than previously reported. This may be due to an association between these tumors and obesity or because asymptomatic GISTs are underdiagnosed in the general population. These tumors are particularly common in older patients and special attention must be given when performing LSG on this subpopulation. The stomach should be inspected thoroughly before resection. A tumor on the lesser curvature may necessitate changing the surgical plan or aborti… Show more

“…[26] We have higher incidence of GIST, more than 1%, in this study than that published in literature [8,21], and occurring in higher age groups. However, the tumor was completely resected and the postoperative period was well but we should deal with caution with these higher age groups.…”

“…Yuval et al [21] detect 5 cases of GIST among 827 patients, Almazeedi et al [8] has only 1 case of GIST among 656 patients, and a study by Enver Vardar et al [22] found that GIST has an incidence of 1.1 % (in 2 out of 181 patients). On the contrary GIST was not present in many other studies.…”

“…Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are crucial to localize the tumor and investigate potential metastases. In a study performed by Yuval et al, GIST incidence was found to be 0.6% based on retrospective histopathological examinations of gastric specimens resected from obese patients who had undergone LSG (7). Studies have demonstrated the importance of carefully examining the complete stomach with respect to pathological lesions before resection during the LSG procedures.…”

“…There were significant differences in the prevalence of histopathologically detected NE cell hyperplasia in LSG specimens and the prevalence ratio was from 0% up to 39.4% (12)(13)(14)(21)(22)(23)(24)(25). In Gündoğan et al's study, they found this high ratio for the presence of NE cell hyperplasia in LSG specimens.…”

“…Yuval et al presented a large series (827 cases) and they found in only 5 (0.6%) GIST histopathologically in patients with sleeve gastrectomy (21). In addition, in Almazeedi et al study, GIST were found incidentally in one of the 656 patients, and in Gordezky et al study, two GIST cases were detected incidentally in 343 patients (12).…”
