The treatment of Qibai Pingfei Capsule on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease may be mediated by Th17/Treg balance and gut-lung axis microbiota

Abstract: Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a prevalent, progressive respiratory disease, has become the third leading cause of death globally. Increasing evidence suggests that intestinal and pulmonary microbiota dysbiosis is associated with COPD. Researchers have shown that T helper (Th) 17/regulatory T (Treg) imbalance is involved in COPD. Qibai Pingfei Capsule (QBPF) is a traditional Chinese medicine used to treat COPD clinically in China. However, the effects of QBPF intervent… Show more

“…After 6 h, the mice were injected intraperitoneally with 0.5 ml of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) containing HUC-MSCs (2 × 10 6 cells/ml, iCell Bioscience). After 3 days of HUC-MSC intervention, the fecal samples of the mice were collected (Wu et al, 2022). Then, the fecal samples were homogenized and diluted to a final concentration of 50 mg/ml using sterile saline.…”

“…The application of traditional Chinese medicine to regulate intestinal microecology can improve COPD symptoms, and reduce the risk of COPD progression. In vivo , herbal medicines such as Qibai Pingfei Capsules, Tonifying Lung and Kidney Soup can improve lung function by activating a series of pathways such as STAT3/STAT5, and Xuanbai Chengqi Decotion can ameliorate lung inflammation in COPD mice by correcting the Th17/Treg imbalance in the gut-lung axis [ [55] , [56] ]. Tonifying Lung and Spleen Soup could remodel the SCFAs/GPR43/NLRP3 pathway by reshaping the gut microbiota, repairing the broken mucosal barrier, and improving mucosal immune function in COPD rats [ 57 ].…”

“… 126 Remodeling of the gut microbiota can maintain Th17/Treg homeostasis and improve COPD. 127 Currently, there are limited studies on oral probiotics modulating immunity to COPD. The mechanisms involved need to be further investigated.…”
