We argue that there is currently an under-reporting of the ways in which pain can be associated with problem behavior, which is seriously limiting the recognition of this welfare problem. A review of the caseloads of 100 recent dog cases of several authors indicates that a conservative estimate of around a third of referred cases involve some form of painful condition, and in some instances, the figure may be nearly 80%. The relationship is often complex but always logical. Musculoskeletal but also painful gastro-intestinal and dermatological conditions are commonly recognized as significant to the animal’s problem behavior. The potential importance of clinical abnormalities such as an unusual gait or unexplained behavioral signs should not be dismissed by clinicians in general practice, even when they are common within a given breed. In general, it is argued that clinicians should err on the side of caution when there is a suspicion that a patient could be in pain by carefully evaluating the patient’s response to trial analgesia, even if a specific physical lesion has not been identified.

Abstract:Comparative psychology is the branch of psychology that studies animal behavior. This article describes the value of comparative psychology for pet industry litigation. An overview is provided on the unique strengths and skills of a comparative psychologist and how comparative psychology differs from other scientific disciplines interested in the behavior of animals. In addition, examples are provided on how comparative psychology can be applied to litigation in the pet industry. Information is also provided on the training of comparative psychologists and where comparative psychologists can be found.

Resumenla convivencia entre los perros domésticos (Canis familiaris) y los humanos puede verse afectada por la presencia de problemas de conducta. éstos, principalmente, se relacionan con la agresión, el miedo y la ansiedad de separación, y en menor medida, con desórdenes compulsivos. las alteraciones relacionadas con la agresión son las más preocupantes a nivel social, dado el riesgo que conllevan para el humano. en la presente revisión se describe el patrón conductual de cada tipo de alteración así como algunos de los factores que se encuentran asociados al desarrollo de los problemas de conducta. Por último, se revisan las evidencias de diversos tratamientos conductuales y se discuten posibles aportes del área de la Psicología.Palabras clave: problemas de conducta; perros domésticos; tratamientos conductuales. AbstractCoexistence between humans and domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) can be affected by the presence of behavioural problems. These mainly relate to aggression, fear and separation anxiety, and to a lesser extent to compulsive disorders. alterations associated with aggression are the most socially worrying because of the risk to humans. In this review the behavioural pattern of each type of alteration as well as some of the factors that are associated with their development are described. Finally, evidence from various behavioural treatments is reviewed and possible contributions from psychological science are discussed.
