“…The first comparisons were made between AOs and placebo: Mupirocin vs. placebo, more improvement with mupirocin (Eells et al, 1986), Gould (Gould: Mupirocin in General Practice: A Placebo-Controlled... -Google Acad emico, n.d.); fusidic acid vs. placebo, more improvement with fusidic acid (Koning et al, 2012); retapamulin vs. placebo, more improvement with retapamulin (Koning et al, 2012). The second type of comparison was between AOs: gentamicin vs. neomycin, gentamicin showed superior results to neomycin (Farah et al 1967); retapamulin vs. fusidic acid, with no significant differences (Oranje et al, 2007).…”

“…Gentamicin was chosen as an example because it is known to be an effective antibiotic (Taplin, 1972), and clinical studies have proved it to be at least as effective topically as neomycin (Farah et al, 1967). “…Our main concern in this study was to determine whether topical antibiotics play an important role in the treatment of superficial bacterial infection of the skin. Gentamicin was chosen as an example because it is known to be an effective antibiotic (Taplin, 1972), and clinical studies have proved it to be at least as effective topically as neomycin (Farah et al, 1967). Davis, Fulgum & Taplin (1968) and Lloyd (1969) found that the addition of neomycin to corticosteroid preparations did not enhance the effect of the steroids used topically on infected and inflammatory eczematous lesions.…”

“…White (1964) 22 published promising results using gentamicin ointment in the eradication of staphylococci from nasal carriers. Several publications 7–9, 12 15–21 have referred to the topical use of gentamicin in the treatment of pyoderma etc. Others have reported its in vitro activity 1 2 5 13 14 23…”

“…It is thus related to the Neomycin group and Streptomycin but does not exhibit cross‐resistance to these antibiotics. 15 12 13 14 Recently it has been established that gentamicin consists of three isomeric pseudo‐oligosaccharides designated C 1 C 1A C 2 , each of equal potency.…”
