Thirty-three patients undergoing elective transurethral resection of the prostate were allocated randomly to receive either 0.9% isotonic saline 7 ml kg-1 (16 patients), or 3% hypertonic saline 7 ml kg-1 (17 patients) as a preload before spinal anaesthesia. After spinal anaesthesia, the incidence of systolic arterial pressure < 75% of control value was greater in the normal saline group than in the hypertonic saline group. Also, the mean dose of phenylephrine required to maintain arterial pressure > 75% of the baseline value was significantly greater in the normal saline group than in the hypertonic saline group.
The clinical and histopathological features of disseminate and recurrent infundibulo-folliculitis are described in 2 patients. The lesions are confined to the trunk and consist of discrete, small, follicular papules. The condition is self-limited but recurrent, and histologically characterized by an infundibular folliculitis. The deposition of glycogen in the infundibular and perifollicular epithelium is reported.
SUMMARY
The value of topical antibiotics in the treatment of pyodermas was reassessed. In a double‐blind study, the efficacy of 0.1% gentamicin cream was tested. There was no significant statistical difference in the degree of improvement between the group of patients that received the gentamicin cream and those treated with a placebo. The response obtained was thought to be due to washing and removal of crusts. Hence, it is considered advisable to abstain from the use of topical antibiotics in pyodermas.
The prevalence of Corynebacterium acnes on the foreheads of male and female children of caucasoid and negroid origin has been investigated using a semi-quantitative technique. Few organisms were recovered from children of less than 12 years of age. The increase in count occurred earliest in negroid girls and latest in caucasoid boys. This may be related to the age of puberty.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
