“…Some processes in organisms have been identifi ed to require an acidic environment generated by V-ATPase (Forgac, 2007). The degradation of viral macromolecules might be recognized and sorted to lysosomes by antiviral immune responses of the resistant strain after BmNPV infection in the resistant silkworm strain, because acidifi cation of late endosomes by V-ATPase is important in intracellular traffi cking of newly synthesized lysosomal enzymes from the Golgi apparatus to lysosomes (Forgac, 2007), and the processing of lysosomal enzymes through hydrolyses also requires optimal acidic pH (Hasilik, 1992;Pisoni and Thoene, 1991). The transcription regulation of the V-ATPase c subunit gene should be dependent on the potential transcriptional binding sites in the promoter region and the loop-stem structure in 3'-UTR analyzed above.…”

“…It is widely accepted that a major role of these organelles in a wide variety of cell types is the disassembly of macromolecules through the use of enzymatic digestion in an acidic microenvironment (Chou et al, 1992;Pisoni and Thoene, 1991). In some cells such as renal proximal tubular cells, filtered plasma proteins are reabsorbed by endocytosis and are transferred to lysosomes for degradation (Gekle, 1998).…”

“…Further, the lysosomal interior is acidic, which not only facilitates iron release from proteins, but also enhances the oxidative damage caused by iron [28]. Lysosomes also maintain a high concentration of the amino acid cysteine [29], which may participate in the reduction of iron :…”
