The toddler's cuboid fracture.

Abstract: The authors describe two proved and two presumed cases of cuboid fractures in toddlers. These children were seen because of their inability to bear weight on the affected foot following a fall. Initial radiographs were normal; however, early scintigraphy revealed focal uptake in the cuboid. Follow-up radiographs demonstrated characteristic sclerosis of the base of the cuboid. Cuboid fractures are another example of a toddler's injury that may be difficult to diagnose at initial physical and radiographic examin… Show more

“…Although stress fractures can occur almost in any bone in childhood, they are most common in the cuboid bone and have been termed one of the bunk bed fractures. 16,17 What happens is that the patient comes down on the hyperextended forefoot, and either the base of the first metatarsal or the cuboid bone becomes impacted, or both. The buckle fracture of the first metatarsal is more common (see ►Fig.…”

“…This type of stress fracture results from falls, sudden twists, or bumping into objects; and they usually involve the tibial shafts, although they can also affect the calcaneus and cuboid. [10][11][12] Plain radiography has traditionally been the initial study of choice. A spiral-shaped fracture line Figure 3A (A) Anterior and (B) posterior planar images obtained following technetium-99m methylene diphosphonate administration do not identify an abnormality definitively in the lumbar spine.…”
