The Time Delays of Gravitational Lens HE 0435−1223: An Early‐Type Galaxy with a Rising Rotation Curve

Abstract: We present Hubble Space Telescope images and 2 years of optical photometry of the quadruple quasar HE 0435-1223. The time delays between the intrinsic quasar variations are ∆t AD = −14.37 +0.75 −0.85 , ∆t AB = −8.00 +0.73 −0.82 , and ∆t AC = −2.10 +0.78 −0.71 days. We also observed non-intrinsic variations of ∼0.1 mag yr −1 that we attribute to microlensing. Instead of the traditional approach of assuming a rotation curve for the lens galaxy and then deriving the Hubble constant (H 0 ), we assume H 0 = (72 ± 7… Show more

“…Given the short time delays (Kochanek et al 2006) and because we expect microlensing to lead to uncorrelated flux variations between the four lensed components, these results support the assumption that the observed magnitude and color A42, page 6 of 8 variations are very likely caused by intrinsic variations of the QSO, while the lensed "A" component is probably also affected by microlensing.…”

“…One pair of such multiply lensed quasars with similar parameters, SDSS J1004+4112 and HE 0435-1223, were reported by Fohlmeister et al (2006) and Kochanek et al (2006), respectively. We shall employ this pair to illustrate how the cosmological distribution of galaxies near the light path can substantially enlarge the random uncertainty in the value of H 0 .…”

Two of these systems (H1413+117, B1933+503) are easily reproduced by simple models because of the large uncertainty affecting the position of the lensing galaxy (σ gal > 0.…”
