The Therapeutic Procedures Inventory: Psychometric properties and relationship to phase of treatment.

Abstract: The internal structure and psychometric properties of the Therapeutic Procedures Inventory — Revised (TPI-R) and the relationship between psychotherapeutic procedures and phase of treatment were investigated. Outpatient psychotherapists completed the TPI-R at various points in treatment, with regard to their latest session with a particular patient. “…TAU therapists predominantly described their theoretical orientation as psychodynamic. At the completion of each TAU therapy session, therapists completed the Therapeutic Procedures Inventory (McNeilly & Howard, 1991), a checklist of commonly used psychotherapy techniques. The most common treatment strategies endorsed were gaining a better understanding of the patient, establishing a genuine person-to-person rapport with the patient, and helping the patient talk about feelings and concerns.…”

“…The TSC was developed for this study, incorporating items from the widely used Therapeutic Procedures Inventory (TPI; McNeilly & Howard, 1991) that describes cognitive and behavioral treatment strategies commonly used in caregiver interventions. Items were selected from the TPI that were relevant for the proposed components or modified where necessary so that they corresponded more appropriately to elements of the intervention (e.g., Explored practical solutions to managing behavior problems; Reframed barriers to accepting more help).…”
