Clement of Alexandria’s Homily "Quis Dives Salvetur?" and Its Pastoral Challenges for Alexandrian Christians

The article reconsiders the structure of Clement’s writing Quis dives salvetur? and as a consequence questions the traditional designation of this text as a homily. In the first part, the article focuses on the Gospel text quoted by Clement and attempts to explain some of the unusual choices of the text. In the second part, it highlights some pastorally interesting or, on the contrary, controversial aspects of Clement’s interpretation: (a) the use of the Stoic concept of indifferent things, which makes it possible to give emphasis to the freedom of human decision; (b) the thorough justification of the allegorical interpretation of Mk 10, 21; (c) the pastoral project of the “divine business” based on Lk 16, 9 and finally (d) the possibility of a second repentance after baptism justified by the story of the Apostle John.

Středověká sbírka legend, tradičně označovaná jako Legenda aurea, obsahuje bezmála dvě stovky příběhů, jejichž protagonisty nejsou jen středověcí světci (jak bychom u legendy čekali), ale rovněž postavy vystupující v různých knihách Nového zákona, obzvláště apoštolové. Jedním z nich je apoštol a evangelista Jan. Vyprávění o jeho životě a působení sestává z řady volně propojených epizod, jedna z nich má původ ve starověkém kázání Quis dives salvetur? (QDS) připisovaném Klementu z Alexandrie. Skutečnost, že historka o apoštolu Janovi, původně součást Klementova kázání na text Mk 10,17-31, byla v následujících staletích natolik oblíbená, že se dostala až do nejznámější středověké sbírky legend, je poměrně známá. 1 Nabízí se však otázka, zda ve vyprávění o sv. Janovi, jak ho nacházíme ve Zlaté legendě, nelze nalézt i další stopy tohoto patristického autora. Cílem tohoto článku je tedy (1) porovnat obě verze vyprávění a upozornit na shody a rozdíly mezi nimi, (2) pokusit se identifikovat možné prostředkující texty mezi QDS a Zlatou legendou, (3) zjistit, zda nebyly Klementovým kázáním inspirovány i zbylé části legendy o sv. Janovi, a pokud ano, (4) položit si otázku, proč se autor Legendy nechal inspirovat právě Klementovým kázáním alias proč se spis QDS těšil v pozdním starověku a středověku větší popularitě než jiné dnes známější Klementovy spisy. Dříve než přistoupíme k porovnání obou verzí příběhu, uvedeme základní údaje o textech, kterými se budeme zabývat, včetně jejich rukopisného dochování. * Článek byl připraven v rámci projektu GAČR 18-09922S "Biblical Exegesis of the Other Clement of Alexandria".
