“…Onset of the rains, however, is frequently linked to diapause termination (Denlinger, 1986). The results of this study are similar to those showing that rainfall or artificial wetting stimulates pupation in diapausing larvae (Lamborn, 1938;Squire, 1939;Kevan, 1944;Hynes, 1947;Geering, 1953;Greathead, 1958;van Dinther, 1961;Coutin and Harris, 1968;Usua, 1970;Bowden, 1976). Diapause in the pupae of ethmiid moths is broken in response to sporadic rainfall in desert situations (Powell, 1974).…”

“…Geromyia penniseti is economically important in savanna areas. The population increases rapidly early in the season and the local millet flowering in late September is exposed to severe infestation which may result in up to 90% loss in grain yield (Coutin and Harris, 1968). Recent observations indicate that 100% infestation may occur on late millets (sanio) cultivated mainly in the Casamance region of southern Senegal (Ndoye,19.79c).…”

“…Diapause is broken by warm and humid conditions. In the laboratory, larvae pupate normally when sprayed with 60 mm simulated rainfall ten times at weekly intervals (Coutin and Harris, 1968). The life cycle is completed in two weeks and four or five generations may occur in a single season, with successive generations tending to overlap.…”

“…G. penniseti is economically important on late millets in savanna areas in Africa and South India (Coutin and Harris, 1968;Santharam ef al., 1976). Larval feeding prevents normal seed development and causes complete or partial abortion of spikes, resulting in up to 90% yield loss (Coutin and Harris, 1968). The small orange coloured female fly deposits about 300 eggs within flowering spikelets.…”
