The Taguchi influence on designed experiments

Abstract: This paper is intended to convey the essence of Taguchi's design approach to chemists and others with an interest in chemometrics. Although most Taguchi‐style applications worldwide have been in electronics and in elaborately transformed manufactures, examples are increasingly found in chemical processes and in the food industry. Foremost among Taguchi's contributions is the concept of designing processes and products to be robust to the uncontrollable environmental influences which they experience during thei… Show more

“…The values of bending rigidity as another response parameter of this study were preferred to be smaller; meaning, the higher flexibility is expected for the nonwoven samples. So, the smaller-the-better quality characteristics as the analytical loss function of the software which can be determined according to equation (4), is considered for analyzing the samples' bending rigidity properties [23] …”

“…Therefore, many control factors can be simultaneously studied and optimized [25][26][27]. Among these methods, Taguchi method possesses the advantage that many factors can be examined simultaneously and much quantitative information can be extracted by only a few experimental trials [14,27,28]. The steepest ascent method is an effective experimental procedure for moving sequentially along the direction of the maximum increase in the response, and thus, can approach the optimum rapidly and efficiently [29,30].…”

“…However, Taguchi's orthogonal array experimental design which takes into account several variables at a time, is a cost-effective approach and could be used to search for the optimal HF-LPME operational conditions. Taguchi design methods have been applied to analytical validations to minimize the determination variability and improve method robustness [24] for two decades. Furthermore, Taguchi methods have also been recently applied in other analytical development studies, including sample extraction, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and electrospray mass spectroscopy determinations of pharmaceuticals and chemicals [25][26][27][28][29][30].…”
