The System for Analyzing Verbal Interaction.

Abstract: SYSTEM SAVI (pronounced "savvy") is the acronym for the System for Analyzing Verbal Interaction whose development started in 1964. It is an observation system that defines and codes nine classes of verbal behavior by the theoretical criteria of approaching or avoiding the problems inherent in communicating and by the focus of the communication: person or topic. The nine classes are

“…Clinical nurses and nurses in leadership positions bear responsibility and accountability for good patient care and patient advocacy. 11,12 Yet, as an extensive body of literature reveals, this responsibility can be very difficult to fulfill in contemporary healthcare environments, 6 leading to feelings of moral distress, distancing from patient problems and even attrition from the profession. 13 Ultimately, lack of confidence in ethical decision-making and ability to “do the right thing” affects patient care.…”

“…The SAVI (Simon & Agazarian, 1967) is an observer-rated system that defines and codes nine classes of verbal behavior by theoretical criteria dealing with approaching or avoiding communication patterns. It was developed to focus on communication as an output of a person rather than a characteristic; define a group in terms of potential communication resources as a whole group, subgroups, and as individuals; and monitor the probability that content is transferred from speaker to listener.…”

“…SAVI is a verbal observation system that codes verbal behavior into categories, a matrix of nine classes of behavior that discriminates between the verbal behaviors that facilitate the transfer of information and those that introduce noise into the communication system. In developing the SAVI system, Simon and Agazarian (1967) built on the work of Shannon and Weaver (1964), who demonstrated an inverse relationship between noise (defined as ambiguity, contradiction, or redundancy) and the probability of information being transferred. Shannon and Weaver determined noisy communications to be entropic and clear information to be negentropic .…”

“…This article continues Agazarian's work and discusses four models that build the bridges from the theoretical understanding of phases of system development to being able to research the assumption that systems do indeed develop through predictable phases. The models of Lewin's (1951) life space and his force field of driving and restraining forces, Agazarian's (1997) systems-centered hierarchy of defense modification, Simon and Agazarian's (1967, 2000) system for analyzing verbal interaction (SAVI) and the statistically derived normal curve are all used in conceptualizing the research pathways (Agazarian & Gantt, 2000).…”
