This study has been conducted to examine the dual moderation of structural racism and economic fragility between team diversity and startup team performance. Team diversity is particularly important for new ventures or startups as the need or focus of such startups is on a diverse range of consumers. The role of racism and economic fragility cannot be ignored in this regard. To conduct this research the targeted population is the high-tech startups in France. For data collection, 351 questionnaires were received and processed for data analysis. The results indicated a significant impact of team diversity on startup team performance. The moderating role of structural racism was also significant between team diversity and startup team performance. Whereas, economic fragility also significantly moderates the relationship between team diversity and startup team performance. The practical importance of this study is greatly implied in those startups which incorporate diversity in their workplace. The policymakers are also devoted to performing their part concerning the policies that are being formulated to encourage and promote diversity in the workplace as well as in educational settings. Theoretically, this research contributes to the growing body of literature regarding startup performances. However, most of the high-tech startups in France did not contain the required data for gaining clear facts and figures. This limitation can be catered to in the future by targeting more advanced high-tech startups in France.

Mediation path study on the effect of venture capital support on firm's corporate social responsibility

PurposeThis study examined the influence of corporate governance (CG) in relation to venture capital (VC) investment on invested firm's corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance in the Chinese context. More specifically, this paper examined the mediation of the proportion of independent directors (INDD), management shareholding (MSH) and executives' political connections (POLC) in the above-mentioned relationship.Design/methodology/approachThis empirical study performed multiple mediation testing and bootstrap mediation robustness test on data from Chinese A-class shares IPO companies between 2010 and 2018.FindingsThe results of direct relationship analysis showed that VC support is detrimental to firm' CSR performance, consistent with previous research studies. The indirect effect analysis showed that VC reduced firm' CSR through reduction of INDD on board and increased MSH. Conversely, VC contributed to firm's CSR through higher POLC, which confirmed the significance of the joint mediation model.Practical implicationsThis study offers stakeholders the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the role of VC institutions, independent directors and executives, in terms of firm's CSR, as well as provides insights on control rights allocation and policy drafting on independent directors when considering accessing VC support.Originality/valueBy analyzing the mediation model of the VC–CSR relationship, this paper provides evidence to enrich the debate on the role of CG in the relation between VC and firm's CSR.

PurposeThe expansion of bike-sharing enterprises has led to a series of social problems, and due to the high breakage rate and high recycling cost of bike sharing, enterprises are reluctant to maintain them. Therefore, government regulation does play a leading role in maintaining bike sharing. This study’s purpose is to investigate how the government should regulate the bike-sharing enterprises that maintain bicycles.Design/methodology/approachFirstly, the authors assume that there is only one bike-sharing enterprise and establish a game model that the government regulates the enterprise. Furthermore, the authors extend the model to the case that there are two competing enterprises in the market. Finally, through numerical analysis, the influence of various factors on the government strategy and revenue is analyzed.FindingsThe authors find that the regulatory probability of two enterprises are regulated by the government is larger than that of one enterprise. When two bike-sharing enterprises compete without government regulation, both will choose the non-self-discipline strategy, thus falling into the Prisoner's Dilemma. If the government regulates them, then both enterprises will choose the self-discipline strategy. Finally, through numerical analysis, it is found that the self-discipline behavior of bike-sharing enterprises is related to the government regulatory probability, the cost of self-discipline, the probability of being reported and the penalties. Interestingly, the cost of government regulation will not affect the regulation probability of government.Practical implicationsThis research provides a theoretical reference for the government to make the regulation strategies of bike sharing and achieve the sustainable development of bike sharing.Originality/valueThis research provides a theoretical reference for the government to make the regulation strategies of bike sharing and achieve the sustainable development of bike sharing.
