The Surgical Management of Cervical Cancer

Abstract: Radical hysterectomy with pelvic lymphadenectomy has evolved into the standard therapy for nonbulky disease, and there is a clear advantage in the use of minimally invasive techniques to perform these procedures. However, pending ongoing trials, less radical surgery in patients with low-risk invasive disease as well as sentinel lymph node mapping may emerge as standards of care in selected patients with cervical carcinoma.

“…Indeed, SLN evaluation is now standard of care in breast cancer and melanoma [14,15], as well as in vulvar cancer [16]. Evaluation of SLNs in select cervical cancer cases is now performed in gynecologic oncology practices worldwide and may soon emerge as a part of routine care [17][18][19], however its acceptance in endometrial cancer is more controversial.…”

“…The clear to lightly eosinophilic cytoplasm shown by these tumours may also lead to confusion with clear cell carcinoma . Given the therapeutic and prognostic differences, accurate distinction of gastric‐type EA from endometrial carcinoma is critical …”

“…10,22 Given the therapeutic and prognostic differences, accurate distinction of gastric-type EA from endometrial carcinoma is critical. [23][24][25] With this information in mind, we sought to assess the immunohistochemical expression patterns of MUC6 and HIK1083 in a cohort of endometrial carcinomas, with the aim of elucidating the utility of these markers in differentiating gastric-type EA from some of its mimics arising from the uterine corpus.…”

“…Despite advances in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of the disease, the prognosis of patients remains poor. The median progression-free survival and overall survival range between 2.5 and 13.2 months, and 4.2 and 12.87 months, respectively (7,8). Therefore, a complete understanding of the mechanisms underlying the occurrence and development of cervical cancer are required for the development of novel, effective therapeutic strategies.…”
